Over the last few years anime has gained a ton of popularity around the world, specifically among Millenials and Gen Z.
But what exactly is anime?
Anime in its most basic form means animation. Many people do not know that anime actually means animated cartoon in Japanese! So to everyone in Japan all cartoons are anime, but outside of Japan, anime has taken on the meaning of animations/cartoons made in Japan. Anime can also be used as a broader term including any animations or cartoons that include the signature aspects of Japanese-style animation. Some of these aspects include vibrant colors, characteristic facial expressions, dramatic aspects, storytelling, etc.
Why has it become so popular?
A common theme among anime is its ability to contain multitudes and be complex in nature which makes it more and more popular among adults. There are also multiple genres of anime and there are many that span multiple genres as well. The ability that anime has to combine storytelling and complexity in these ways has made it a huge success among adults.
With the rise of streaming platforms in the last few years, anime has become more readily available and popular. You can see how anime has inspired pop culture with platforms such as Netflix making their own anime shows. Mangas, which are Japanese comic books, have also gained popularity and they often are the inspiration for many anime series.
(Manga in Japanese means comic books!)
